Derek Cartwright

Derek commenced his career working in engineering and as a part time fireman prior to joining Greater Manchester Ambulance Service (GMAS) on the PTS Ambulance in 1986.  He progressed to the Emergency Service in 1988 and was promoted to Leading Ambulance Paramedic in 1990 followed by a period operating as a work-based trainer.   In 1995 he moved into Operational Control as a shift control manager, followed by a two-year period as an Operations Manager in the Oldham/Rochdale, prior to becoming the General Manager for Emergency Services in 1999. 

In 2003 he was appointed to the post of Director of Operations and operated as a member of the GMAS Board.  On establishment of the North West Ambulance Service in 2006, Derek was appointed to the post of Area Director for the Cumbria & Lancashire area and was subsequently promoted to Director of Emergency Services in 2009.

In November 2012, Derek was appointed to the role of Director of Operations and then in March 2016 he was appointed as Interim Chief Executive. Derek was appointed as Chief Executive on 10 May 2016.

Derek has a Master's degree in Business Administration and is a serving Brother in the Order of St John.  He received the Queen's Ambulance Medal (QAM) in the New Year's Honours list of 2015. He lives in Bolton with his wife Joanne, has four grown up children and a Grandson. Derek is a lifelong supporter of Bolton Wanderers.  He is also a Registered Beekeeper and keeps chickens.
