Join us on an ambulance shift in your Town or City

26 January 2012 - Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a Paramedic? Well, now you can get a ‘virtual’ idea with the North West Ambulance Service’s ‘Tweet-a-thon’. The Trust is inviting the public to follow a day in the life of an emergency ambulance crew on a full shift in five of the region’s major towns and cities via Twitter.

Every day from Monday 30 January 2012, the North West’s ambulance service will bring to life a days’ work by a different ambulance crew, covering the five counties which make up the North West.

The idea is to show the variety of incidents an emergency ambulance attends along with the other tasks they have to complete in a typical day such as stocking the medicine bag and cleaning the ambulance.

To bring the incidents to life and bring to the public the working day as it happens, a member of the Trust’s communications team will accompany the ambulance crew as observers and ‘tweet’ throughout the shift.

Director of Emergency Services, Derek Cartwright comments: “The newspapers and airwaves are full of the role ambulance crews play when dealing with alcohol related incidents and although this is important to show, we want people to know about the other side of the service – the race to get to life threatening emergencies, the rescues and the comfort an ambulance crew can bring to patients and their relatives.

“We also want to show the human side of the ambulance service. Each member of staff is someone’s son or daughter, mother or father. They have feelings and emotions like everyone else, yet they carry out acts of courage every day in what can be a demanding and stressful job.

“The day to day working life of an ambulance crew can be unpredictable, we never completely know what’s behind each 999 call until we get there so we have no idea what we will experience on the day, however it’s sure to be informative and interesting .

“Join us for our Tweet-a-thon from the comfort of your home or office, or whilst you’re on the move, and tell your friends! We’d love to know what you think.”

The Tweets published will not in any way identify patients and to further ensure patient confidentiality is maintained, the Trust will not tweet the exact location of incidents. Unfortunately, the Trust is unable to ‘follow up’ the condition or status of a patient.

The ambulance service receives almost 3,000 emergency calls every day.
