15.30 update

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokesperson comments:

“Emergency services continue to work tirelessly to deal with the major incident at Wood Flour Mills in Tunstall Road, Bosley.

“There are 35 people who have been assessed at the scene of the incident by ambulance staff of which four have been treated at the scene for breathing difficulties and a further four have been taken to hospital for treatment – one of those is in a serious condition.

“Two patients have been taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital, one patient has been taken to Whiston Hospital and one patient has been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by air ambulance (please note not Wythenshaw as reported earlier).

“There have been three explosions and four people remain unaccounted for. A safety cordon has been set up around the scene and nearby Bollin Mill Road has been shut.

“We continue to work with all our emergency service partners and the local authority to deal with this incident. At this time we believe four people are trapped and we’re dealing with multiple explosions.

“We advise anyone in the area to ensure they keep their windows and doors shut, and any drivers in the vicinity should switch off their air conditioning. Please avoid the area while we deal with this.”

‘At 09.14 today Friday 17 July 2015, we received a call to reports of an explosion at Wood Flour Mills, Tunstall Road, Macclesfield. We have despatched at least six ambulances, two rapid response vehicles, two doctors, four managers, Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and air ambulance to the scene.

“NWAS is also being supported by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service who has despatched a paramedic area support officer, a senior paramedic officer, HART paramedics, a community paramedic, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a trauma doctor on board and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Tatenhill in Staffordshire are in attendance with further ambulances en-route.

 ‘So far one patient has been taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital by land ambulance and one patient taken to Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, by air ambulance suffering from burns.

‘We advise people to stay away from the area and for local residents to keep windows closed.’

‘A lead doctor from the MERIT is also on scene.

‘We are currently assessing the scene and working closely with other members of the emergency services, with our priority being to ensure people receive the medical treatment they need as quickly as possible.

‘Our primary role is to assess the level and nature of injuries, and ensure that those people most in need are treated first and taken to hospital. 

‘At this stage, it is too early for us to confirm the number of casualties.’
