25 July 2015 - Greater Manchester Awards Greater Manchester ambulance staff who have shown exceptional service to North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) were commended at The Greater Manchester Awards Ceremony which was held on 29 June 2015 at the De Vere Village Hotel, Bury. Attendees were welcomed by Steve Hynes, Head of Service before being addressed by Wyn Dignan, Chairman of NWAS and Lord Lieutenant, Warren Smith. Seventeen Queen’s Long Service and Good Conduct Medals were awarded by the Lord Lieutenant and Bob Williams, Chief Executive of NWAS along with a further 22 awards for 20 and 25 year’s long service to NWAS which were presented by Bob Williams and Wyn Dignan. The Syl Riley Memorial Award was presented to Dan Thurston who, over the past twelve months, has shown total commitment to developing himself resulting in a promotion to Performance Manager. His newly found competence and confidence has proven to be an asset to Greater Manchester EOC. A special commendation was also awarded to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Team after a team of firefighters earlier this year responded to a life-threatening incident involving one of their team members who had gone into cardiac arrest. By the team’s prompt actions, using Basic Life Support skills including an AED, they resuscitated their colleague prior to the arrival of NWAS. The team are commended for their actions which were significant to the recovery of their colleague. Overall, the ceremony was well attended and enjoyed by guests and award winners.
