Provision of NHS 111 services in the North West

NHS Direct has announced that it is seeking to gradually withdraw from its remaining contracts for the NHS 111 service, as it is unable to deliver the service within the agreed contract price. NHS England has pledged to support commissioners of NHS 111 services to put in place alternative providers, to take over the NHS 111 services provided by NHS Direct to patients. NWAS is in preliminary discussions about the possibility of temporarily taking over the running of part of the NHS 111 contract in the North West currently delivered by NHS Direct to ensure continuity and safety of services to patients and the public within our region. This would be in addition to the current portion of the service the Trust has been delivering since April this year as a holding position until a retendering exercise for the NHS 111 services for the North West is undetaken by the commissioners.
