New scheme reduces ambulance call outs

A triage tool developed by one of our paramedics has reduced emergency call outs to some nursing and residential homes by over 50%.

The purpose of the triage tool is to support care home staff, clinical and non-clinical, to access the correct healthcare for their patients. Calling 999 may be the appropriate response in some cases, but if not then the tool points staff in the right direction for local services and primary care, enabling them to better support their patient’s needs.

A total of 50 care homes are currently on board and benefiting from the significant support this triage tool can deliver.

The tool is based upon a modified Manchester Triage process – a clinical risk management tool used worldwide. It was developed by Mark Wenman, Community Specialist Paramedic and Stephanie Allmark, Triage Development & Evaluation Lead alongside the Advanced Life Support Group (ALSG).

A further 230 care homes across the region will be trained to use the tool over the next 12 to 24 months.
