Community First Responders

Community First Responders (CFRs) are groups of volunteers who live and work in the local community.

They are trained and activated by North West Ambulance Service to attend certain emergency calls where time can make the difference between life and death. The responder provides care until the ambulance arrives.

In instances where someone has chest pains, simply giving them oxygen can make a big difference. In extreme cases they can perform Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or use the defibrillator to restart someone's heart.

Anyone who lives or works in the North West can get involved with the scheme, by training as a CFR, or to help with other vital tasks such as fund-raising, support or administration. Volunteers do not need previous first aid experience to join their local group, as full training will be provided.

Community first responders are ordinary people who do extraordinary things. You could be an everyday hero by sparing a few hours each week to help save lives in your local community.

We will train you to respond to emergencies and you can go about your normal routine. If we need your help, we will alert you!

You will help patients who are suffering with chest pains, having breathing difficulties, in diabetic emergencies, in cardiac arrest, or who are unconscious or fitting.

You will provide care and reassurance to support patients and their relatives in the vital few minute before the ambulance arrives. You really could make the difference between life and death.

About you

You need to be caring, calm under pressure and willing to take part in regular training.

You will carry basic life-saving equipment such as oxygen and a defibrillator.

Volunteering is flexible, rewarding and works round you:

  • Give back to your local community
  • No previous training or experience needed
  • Anyone aged 18+ with a car can help
  • Commit just a few hours a week
  • Enhance your skills and job prospects
