Following the sunniest April on record, according to the Met Office, sunshine is expected to return from Thursday (19 June), with temperatures likely reaching 30 degrees across much of the region and the warm, pleasant weather continuing into the weekend and next week.
Although most of us will welcome this, warmer weather also brings with it potential health risks so it’s important to remember these top tips:
- spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm
- stay hydrated
- cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses
- use at least factor 30 sunscreen
- drink alcohol responsibly
- look out for others, particularly elderly and young children who are most vulnerable
We would also like to remind you that overheating can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing, so make sure you have collected any repeat prescriptions you may need and continue to use any inhalers or medications as advised by your doctor.
Repeat prescriptions can be ordered through the NHS App or online.
Medical Director, Chris Grant said: “During sunny weekends we tend to receive more 999 calls for alcohol-related incidents and accidents outside, as well as exacerbations of existing conditions. Many accidents and emergencies can be easily avoided by taking a bit of extra care to stay safe and keep well whilst enjoying the warm weather.
“As always, we are here for you if you need us – dial 999 for life-threatening conditions and use 111 online or by phone if you need help quickly but it’s not an emergency.”
