Erika and a paramedic from the London Ambulance Service, Robert Patton, were able to provide life-saving CPR and critical care to a member of the fire service at their Training and Safety centre in Bury last month.
Erika takes up the story, “While I was delivering a training session at the site, I was informed that one of their colleagues had taken ill outside. He was sitting on a bench, not feeling well. So, along with Robbie, who was observing the training, we went over to assess him. Unfortunately, he deteriorated and went into cardiac arrest. Luckily, I had a response kit in my car, a defibrillator to hand, and several of his fire service colleagues nearby to assist.
“As a team with me directing, we were able to deliver effective CPR, and he began to breathe again and regain consciousness. He was then taken to the hospital by one of our crew. I’m delighted to hear he is now recovering well at home.”
Erika and Robert were presented with their commendations at a GMFRS recognition event last week, alongside other firefighters, support staff, partner agencies and members of the public, who were also being recognised for other outstanding contributions.
Dave Russel, Chief Fire Officer for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, said, “We were incredibly grateful to be able to recognise the life-saving actions of Robbert and Erika. Robbie’s and Erika’s calmness and management of the situation demonstrated their utmost professionalism, for which we are so thankful and which they and their Services should be immensely proud. We cannot thank them enough for bringing back to life one of our colleagues.”
On the award, Erika continues, “It was a fantastic result, but certainly wasn’t just due to the actions of just me and Robbie. It was thanks to everyone present, as well as the fact that we were able to provide immediate care. Although it’s nice to be recognised, we were just carrying out our duty, and it just represents the contributions all my colleagues make every day.”
Assistant Director of Resilience Steve Hynes says, “I know Erika isn’t comfortable with taking the limelight, but she should be proud of herself, and it’s important we celebrate these types of incidents when we can. I’m sure that all involved were grateful for her presence. Particularly the gentleman involved.”
