A team of NWAS colleagues are preparing to run approximately 250 kilometres continuously through day and night on 12-13 November to raise funds for North West Ambulance Charity and BBC Children in Need.
The challenge, titled ‘Run the Towers,’ will connect three iconic North West landmarks: Beetham Tower in Manchester, St John’s Beacon in Liverpool and Blackpool Tower, before returning towards Greater Manchester with a planned finish at Media City, Salford.
The group includes ten core runners, supported by guest runners and a dedicated support crew. They will aim to complete the relay within 24 hours of running time.
The proposed route includes:
- Manchester to Liverpool: Approximately 70km
- Liverpool to Blackpool: Approximately 106km
- Blackpool to Greater Manchester: Approximately 81km
Running for two important causes
After being inspired by Sarah Cox’s multi-day marathon challenge in 2025, the supporter-led challenge has been created to raise money for the official charity of North West Ambulance Service, North West Ambulance Charity, and Children in Need, while promoting staff wellbeing, teamwork and community engagement across the North West.
North West Ambulance Charity supports North West Ambulance Service above and beyond what NHS funding can provide. This includes enhancements to services and projects, funding life-saving equipment, education and awareness initiatives and supporting the wellbeing of staff and volunteers.
“The dedication and determination shown by the Run the Towers team reflects the very best of the North West Ambulance Service. Their fundraising efforts will help us fund projects that enhance care, support staff and create lasting impact on communities across the North West. We couldn’t be prouder to support them with this incredible challenge.” – Jemma Kinch, Head of North West Ambulance Charity
With much of the challenge taking place in darkness, the runners will rely on careful planning, mutual support and determination to complete the journey. Each core runner is expected to cover approximately 50 kilometres across the event.
One of the organisers said: “This is a huge challenge, but it brings together everything we value about teamwork, resilience and supporting others. We are proud to be raising money for two fantastic charities while connecting the communities across the North West.”
The event is being developed with support from Run North West and GB Ultras, providing runner and support-vehicle tracking, with discussions continuing with Run North West regarding additional assistance. The team welcomes support from colleagues, local businesses and members of the public as preparations continue.
