Three NWAS staff were recently recognised as ‘Allies in Action’ by our staff Disability Network, for their work to help promote inclusion, equity, and fair treatment for colleagues.
Director of Finance Carolyn Wood, Head of Violence Prevention, Reduction and Security Natalie Samuels, and Associate Medical Director Dr Tim Smith, each received special pin badges and letters of commendation, for going above and beyond their roles to support the Network.
Presenting their awards, Disability Network Co-Chair Francesca Balon said:
“Well done to Carolyn, Natalie and Tim, who thoroughly deserve this recognition. Each have been a fantastic ally in their support to the Network and wider colleagues.
“They have gone beyond to take deliberate action to challenge and dismantle discriminatory practices, promote equal opportunities and amplify marginalised voices, to help make the trust a more inclusive and supportive workplace.”
Carolyn has been the executive sponsor for the network since its formation. She said:
“I’m honoured to receive this badge. It means a great deal and my motivation has been to stand alongside colleagues, amplify voices, and help build an environment where everyone feels they belong, and where differences are embraced and celebrated.
“Allyship isn’t just about words, it’s a promise to listen, learn, challenge assumptions and take action to remove barriers and create opportunities for all. I’d encourage everyone to support the network and become an ally. Every small action matters and together, we can make a real difference.
“This is also personal for me. My sister had a long-term condition which, unbeknown to me for many years, is recognised as a hidden disability. That realisation reinforced how important it is to raise awareness and challenge assumptions because so many disabilities aren’t visible.”
Natalie said:
“It was a proud moment for me to receive this commendation. The Network creates such positive change to make NWAS a great place to work for all.
“Being an ally to the networks is important so that we recognise the challenges our colleagues living with a disability face in the workplace. With that understanding, I can improve my programme of work to keep them safe.
Tim said:
“It was a huge privilege to be recognised as an Ally in Action. Our patients benefit enormously from having a truly diverse workforce that best reflects the communities it serves.
“In sharing my experience of living and working with a disability, I hope to support our colleagues to remove any real or perceived barriers for them to flourish.
“Diversity, inclusivity, equity and trust are fundamental features of teams reaching their full potential. These values and behaviours are central to the delivery of exceptional patient care.
“I am proud to be an ally of the staff disability network and am delighted to work alongside them in their efforts to make NWAS an even better, more supportive and inclusive place to work.”
