This week, we will highlight some of our learners and the opportunities we offer to both existing trust staff and external candidates.
We are committed to developing a skilled, diverse workforce. This investment has once again earned national recognition. In the latest rankings, NWAS was named 27th in Sunday Times Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers for 2025, reflecting our continued focus on high-quality learning, inclusion and career development opportunities for people at every stage of their journey.
Head of Education, Paula Davies, says, “Apprenticeships at NWAS are one of the powerful routes for developing our workforce. Whether it’s people at the beginning of their careers or others seeking an opportunity to retrain or upskill. You can earn while you learn and have a chance to gain a recognised qualification for work you’re already doing.”
“We are incredibly proud of what we can offer, as demonstrated by our position in the Sunday Times Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers, which is a testament to the hard work of our learners and teams who guide them.”
We know apprenticeship opportunities at NWAS are highly sought after. Our latest recruitment drive for Emergency Medical Technicians was closed early last month, after more than 600 applications were received. Equally many of our staff take the opportunity to earn a paramedic qualification while continuing to work for NWAS. But they are not just for people who want to work in an ambulance. In fact, over the last year, nearly 200 people began apprenticeship training and enrolled in courses including accountancy, data analysis, and project management.

Current EMT apprentice Ellie Savage says, “I started as an Emergency Medical Advisor with NWAS, taking 999 calls before moving on to dispatch, where I was involved in allocating resources. Taking 999 calls made me realise my passion for helping people further and for making a difference in their lives on their worst days.
“To someone considering an apprenticeship, I would tell them to just go for it! It can be challenging at times, but it is also equally as rewarding.”
