Pay

Everyone who works for the NHS is guaranteed a salary that matches their ability and responsibilities with the opportunity to increase it through training and development.

Agenda for Change is the national pay system for all directly employed staff except doctors and very senior managers. The Agenda for Change salary scale depends on the role, its responsibilities and the skills and experience needed.

Leave and flexible working

Full-time members of staff instantly have 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 after five years NHS service, and 33 after ten. You also have the option to buy additional leave days after one year.

We also offer part-time hours, flexible working, parental and special leave, and maternity/paternity leave to help balance your work and personal life.

Pension

The NHS Pension Scheme is one of the most generous and comprehensive in the UK. Every new employee automatically becomes a member and you will get an excellent package of pension benefits.

Salary sacrifice schemes

We offer a number of salary sacrifice schemes which can make everyday purchases and services that little bit cheaper. These work by taking a monthly amount from your gross salary before tax and national insurance deductions – giving you a financial saving.

Some of the schemes we currently offer include:

  • Childcare vouchers through Childcare Choices
  • Home electronics
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Care lease scheme.

Discounts

You can benefit from a wide variety of discounts from both well-known brands and national retailers, as well as local businesses. These include:

  • Gym memberships with a variety of popular national chains.
  • Restaurant chains and eating out
  • Travel and holiday deals
  • Fashion and retail
  • Blue Light Card – As an NHS worker, for £5 you can get access to thousands of discounts from a large selection of brands and retailers.
  • Health Service Discounts is free, and also offers thousands of discounts across national brands and retailers.

Career break opportunities

A career break offers the opportunity to take an extended period away from work which exceeds that offered by normal leave arrangements or other options such as parental leave. However, this is discretionary and will depend on the circumstances around the career break request.

Study leave for sponsored courses

We actively encourage learning and development throughout your career and try our best to help wherever we can. That’s why study leave will be facilitated for anyone who is required to sit an examination as part of a study course supported by us.

Salary Finance

We have teamed up with Salary Finance to offer all staff financial support, including affordable loans, and a range of advice and support around budgeting, planning, family, or buying a home.
